Typhoon Shanshan Alert:
As Typhoon Shanshan approaches Kyushu, Japan has issued its highest emergency alert. With maximum sustained winds of 95 knots (176 km/h), it is predicted to strengthen into a Category 3 hurricane by Thursday.
Heavy Rainfall:
Up to 600 millimeters (24 inches) of rain are expected to fall on Kagoshima prefecture in Kyushu in a single day, perhaps causing flooding and large waves.
Power Outages:
In the prefectures of Kagoshima and Miyazaki, there have been power outages in over 13,000 buildings. At its Ohira power plant, Kyushu Electric Power Co. plans to stop operating two units.
Impact on Manufacturing:
Toyota Motor Corp. will decide whether to resume operations at any of its 14 facilities after suspending them from Wednesday night to Thursday morning.
Transportation Disruptions:
From Wednesday through Saturday, Japan Airlines will cancel 170 domestic flights.
